Business lines and service catalog

Group work into business lines, list every service with its fee and tax, and switch services on or off in one click.

Most small firms sell far more than one thing. A single client might buy a personal return, monthly bookkeeping for a side business, and an occasional consulting hour. If every one of those lives under a different name in a different file, pricing gets inconsistent and reporting becomes guesswork. Business lines and the service catalog give your firm one organised menu of what you sell.

Business lines: the big groups

A business line is the broad area of work, such as Tax, Accounting, Consulting, or Marketing. Lines are deliberately few. They answer the question a partner asks first: which part of the practice is this work for? When you open a service card you choose the line before you pick the service, which keeps the list short and the choice obvious.

  • Tax: personal returns, corporate returns, instalments, and filings.
  • Accounting: bookkeeping, year-end packages, and payroll support.
  • Consulting: advisory time, onboarding help, and one-off projects.
  • Marketing: optional services for firms that also help clients present themselves.

Your lines do not have to match these. Rename, add, or remove them so the structure fits how your firm already talks about its work.

The service catalog: what you actually sell

The catalog is the list of individual services under those lines. Each entry stores a name, the business line it belongs to, the tax that applies, and the fee. When a staff member adds a service to a client card, the fee and tax fill in automatically. Nobody retypes a price, and nobody quotes the same job two different ways.

Fees that stay consistent

Consistency is where small firms quietly lose money. One bookkeeper charges eighty dollars for monthly bookkeeping, another charges seventy, and a third forgets to charge for a second entity. With a catalog, the standard fee is one click away. You can still adjust a price on a particular card when a client has a special arrangement, but the default is always the one you decided on.

Turn services on and off

Every catalog entry has a status. Active services appear in the picker. Inactive services disappear from new cards but remain on the historical work that used them. That means you can retire an old package without damaging last year's invoices, and you can bring a seasonal service back with a single click when the season returns.

Why it helps your team

  1. New staff learn the menu in minutes because it is short and structured.
  2. Quotes become faster, since the fee and tax come from the catalog.
  3. Reports by business line show which part of the practice earns what.
  4. Price changes happen in one place and apply to all new cards.

A sensible way to start

Begin with the ten services you sell most often. Give each a plain name a client would recognise, such as T1 personal return or monthly bookkeeping, and attach the right line. Add rarer services later when they come up. A short, honest catalog is more useful than a long one nobody trusts.

Once your catalog is in place, the rest of FirmBoard feels lighter: service cards open quickly, quotes are accurate, and invoices match what the client agreed to. If you would like help shaping your first catalog, talk to us.
